The Legion of Mary is one of the largest lay apostolate organization in the Catholic Church, with well over 3 million active members in almost every country in the world. Patterned after the ancient Roman army, the Legion of Mary aims to give glory to God through the sanctification of its members by a prescribed discipline of prayer and active co-operation with our Blessed Mother Mary in the church’s work of evangelization.
The smallest operating unit of the Legion of Mary is called a praesidium, which holds a weekly meeting, where prayer is intermingled with reports and discussion. Persons who wish to join the Legion must apply for membership in a Praesidium. Our parish of St. Josephine Bakhita is priveleged to have a praesidum under the title of Our Lady Queen of All Saints, a title chosen to mark the day the praesidium started (November 1, 2008, Feast of All Saints). Membership can be in the form of active or auxiliary capacity. An auxiliary member plays an equally important role in acting as a prayer warrior in the life and mission of the praesidium.
Every active legionary member is required to carry out a weekly apostolic work in the spirit of faith and in union with Mary in such fashion that in those worked for and in one’s fellow members, the Person of Our Lord Jesus is once again seen and served by Mary, his Mother. Some of the works done by legionaries include but not limited to home to home visitation, prison ministry, visitation of the sick, catechetical instruction, Pilgrim Virgin statue rotations, organizing retreats and book barrow just to name a few. Our praesidium is not engaged in all of the above activities yet but at present, we are actively rotating three pilgrim virgin statues in the parish.
The purpose of the pilgrim virgin statue visitation is to encourage the praying of the most holy rosary by the family. As you may have heard the adage “The family that prays together stays together”, we believe that a strong family builds a strong community and society. You can book a pilgrim statue visitation via email information below.
The praesidium Queen of All Saints meets every Saturday at the St. Peter’s Mission Church on 6056 Ninth Line north of Britannia Rd at 9:45 a.m. (following the 9:00 a.m. mass). We invite all Catholics to join the Legion of Mary. Come as our guest at any of the meetings.
